Beginners weaving - how to use a table loom (1 to 1 tuition) 2 day course

Welcome! If you have ever thought about learning to weave and buying your own loom, or if you have a loom and don't know where to start, this is the course for you.

With one on one tuition from me you will learn how to set up a loom from scratch, how to weave some basic weave patterns, how to finish off a piece of cloth and many tips and techniques to get you started on your weaving journey.

  • Day 1 - Making a warp and setting up a table loom - with my full guidance I will teach you how to design and make your warp and help you to dress the loom.
  • Day 2 - Weaving - I will teach you how to weave some basic weave structures and to understand the basics of weave pattern draughting and how to finish a piece of cloth to remove it from the loom.
  • All materials are provided.
  • You will take your weave sample home at the end of the day with instructions on how to "Mill" (wet finish) the cloth at home.
  • There is an option to extend the course if you wish to continue weaving a bigger sample and learn more.
  • The studio is situated up one flight of stairs - no lift.
  • Please be aware that there may be other artists working in the other studio spaces, so just to be mindful of this when we are working.
  • Tea and coffee provided please let me know your preferences - sugar, milk, soy......You may want to bring lunch with you or there are plenty of eating options in Courtney Place.

I have over 20 years weaving experience and love to share my skills and keep weaving alive and contemporary.

I have taught weaving for over 8 years both in one on one workshops and to a large workshop group in Napier where I worked at Hohepa Hawkes Bay. Hohepa is a community for adults with intellectual disabilities. I worked in the Rose Weavery for 3 years with some very talented weavers. I taught some new skills to the more experienced weavers and also helped teach new beginners there and helped them overcome personal challenges to go on to become great weavers. I have great patience and will go at your pace to learn this new skill. I look forward to teaching you.

Workshop Reviews

"Sarah has a wealth of weaving knowledge that she imparts with generosity and kindness. She helped me through learning basic weaving techniques and has fired my imagination. Because of the good foundation that I acquired with Sarah, I am now looking forward to becoming proficient. This wouldn’t have happened if I had tried to learn on my own. Sarah is an excellent teacher. Cheers"
